How do I know if a wall is load-bearing?

Signs include walls that run at right angles to the floor joists above, walls that sit directly under another wall on the floor above, and walls that were part of the original structure. Some internal walls can also carry roof loads. None of these signs is completely reliable, so a structural engineer should check the wall before any work starts.
